Most slow cooker to pressure cooker converters ask you one question: how long was the slow cooker recipe? That is not enough information to answer properly, and the reason why is the whole point of this article. Two people can own a pressure cooker, follow the identical conversion, and get different results, because “pressure cooker” describes two meaningfully different appliances. The Slow Cooker to Pressure Cooker converter asks which one you have before it does anything else. Here is why that question matters more than the arithmetic.

The question most converters skip
Pick up a stovetop pressure cooker and an Instant Pot and they look like cousins. Functionally, they are not quite the same machine, and the difference is pressure.
A stovetop pressure cooker, sitting on a burner that can pour in as much heat as you want, reaches about 15 psi at high pressure. An electric cooker like an Instant Pot is limited by its own heating element and safety design, and tops out lower, somewhere around 9 to 12 psi. The Washington Post puts it simply: almost every stovetop cooker hits 15 psi, while most electrics land between 9 and 12.
Higher pressure means a higher boiling point, which means a higher cooking temperature, which means faster. So the same recipe genuinely needs more time in an electric cooker than a stovetop one. How much more? Multiple independent sources converge on roughly 20 to 25 percent, which is the figure my tool uses. That is not a rounding error. On a forty-minute cook, it is ten minutes, which is the difference between tender and tough on a pot roast.
This is why the very first thing the converter asks is which type you own. A tool that skips that question is quietly assuming an answer on your behalf, and it will be wrong for roughly half of its users.
One honest nuance
There is a wrinkle worth knowing, because I would rather give you the complicated truth than the tidy version. The gap between the two cooker types is not uniform across all foods. Some pressure-cooking references note that for certain foods, particularly beans, the practical difference in cooking time comes out smaller than the psi gap suggests, because electric cookers keep cooking during their longer natural pressure release. The food carries on softening after the timer stops.
So treat the adjustment as a well-grounded rule rather than a law of physics. It is right far more often than it is wrong, and it is much better than pretending the two machines are identical.
Then the arithmetic
With cooker type settled, the base conversion is straightforward. Take your slow cooker time on HIGH in hours and multiply by six to get pressure-cook minutes. Four hours on HIGH becomes roughly 24 minutes. Eight hours on LOW is broadly equivalent to four on HIGH, so it lands in the same place.
That gets you the stovetop number. For an electric cooker, add the roughly 25 percent, so those 24 minutes become about 30. The tool does both steps and shows you which cooker assumption produced the result, so you can see the reasoning rather than just the output.
The food type nudges it a little further: meat and beans want slightly longer, vegetables slightly less. And here is the part I promised to be straight about. The direction of those nudges follows the general guidance in my sources. The exact size of each one is my own conservative call, kept deliberately small. It came from my judgment, not from a chart, and I would rather tell you that than let it pass as sourced fact.
Three things that will sink a conversion
The math is the easy part. These are the things that actually decide whether dinner works.
Liquid is not optional. A pressure cooker cannot build pressure without liquid to turn into steam, so it needs at least about a cup. Slow cooker recipes are often written dry, because a crockpot traps every drop of moisture over eight hours and needs no help. Move that same dry recipe into a pressure cooker unchanged and it will not come to pressure at all, and may scorch trying. Read your recipe with this in mind before you start.
The clock in your head is longer than the clock on the display. The time the tool gives you is time at pressure only. Before that timer starts, the cooker has to build pressure, which takes several minutes depending on how full it is. After it ends, the pressure has to come down, and food continues cooking while it does. Neither of those is in the number. This is why the tool discusses build and release time separately instead of quietly folding it in: you deserve to know what dinner will actually cost you in real time. It is still dramatically faster than eight hours in a crockpot. It is just not the twenty-four minutes flat that the display implies.
Vegetables added at the start become soup. Pressure cooking is brutal on vegetables. What takes hours to gently soften in a slow cooker takes a few minutes under pressure, so anything you add at the beginning alongside a slow-cooking cut of meat will disintegrate long before the meat is ready. The working method is to pressure-cook the meat or beans first, release the pressure, add the vegetables, and cook a few more minutes. The tool reminds you when you select vegetables, because this single habit is the difference between a stew and a purée.
What the pressure cooker gives you, and what it takes
Worth being honest about the trade, since the whole point of converting is deciding whether to make it.
You gain enormous amounts of time. An all-day braise becomes a half-hour job, and for tough cuts and dried beans the results are genuinely excellent, because pressure is very good at breaking down connective tissue and softening dense things.
You give up two things. The first is the set-and-forget freedom of a crockpot; you are more present with a pressure cooker, and with a stovetop model you are actively managing heat. The second is subtler: liquid does not evaporate under pressure the way it does over a long slow cook, so sauces that would have thickened and concentrated over eight hours will not. You often finish with something thinner than intended, which you can reduce afterward, but it is a step the slow cooker did for you while you were at work.
If you want flavour depth back, brown your meat first. Most electric cookers have a sauté function, and a stovetop cooker is already a pot on a burner. It takes five minutes and it is the single best thing you can add to a converted recipe.
Safety has its own answer
A converted time estimates how long to cook. It does not tell you whether food is safe to eat, and those two questions have different answers.
For anything with meat, check the internal temperature with a thermometer rather than trusting the timer. The USDA safe minimum internal temperature chart is the reference across this site: 165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meats, 145°F with a rest for whole cuts of beef and pork. Pressure cooking is genuinely good at getting meat done, but “good at” is not “guaranteed,” and the underdone case is the one you cannot see through a sealed lid.
Where all this lives in the tool
The converter asks your cooker type first, applies the HIGH-hours-times-six rule, adds the electric adjustment when it applies, nudges for food type, and reports a range rather than a fake-precise minute. It runs backwards too, if you have a pressure recipe and would rather let it go low and slow.
