How to Use the Converter Above

Sometimes you have an oven recipe but you do not want to wait an hour, or you only have a microwave to hand. A microwave cooks the same food in a fraction of the time. The converter above works out that microwave time from your oven time, or the reverse if you want to take a microwave time back to the oven for a better finish. Here is how to get the most out of it, and where a microwave is simply the wrong tool.

The quick version

A microwave is much faster than an oven. As a rough rule, it takes about a quarter of the oven time, so an hour in the oven is around 15 minutes in the microwave. The exact number depends on the food and on your microwave’s power, and the tool works that out for you.

Step by step

1. Pick your direction. Most people want Oven to Microwave, turning a known oven time into a microwave time. If you want to go the other way, for a better texture, flip to Microwave to Oven.

2. Choose what you are cooking. This matters, because different foods convert at different rates. Reheating leftovers is fastest, vegetables and liquids a little slower, and raw meat and baked dishes slower still. Two of the choices are honest dead ends, and that is on purpose. More on those below.

3. Choose your microwave wattage. Microwave power varies a lot, and it changes the time significantly. A 700 watt microwave takes noticeably longer than a 1000 watt one for the same food. Your wattage is on a label inside the door or on the back. This applies in both directions.

4. Enter your time and read the result. Type in your oven minutes, or use the quick-set buttons, and you get a microwave time as a range. A range is more honest than a single number here, because microwave heating is uneven.

A few things worth knowing

A microwave does not brown or crisp. Ever. This is the big one. A microwave heats food with moisture from the inside, so the surface never gets hot enough to brown or crisp. If you pick a crispy or browned food, like roast potatoes, fried food, or anything with a crust, the tool will not give you a time. It tells you to use an oven or air fryer instead. I would rather be honest than hand you a number that ends in soggy food.

Some foods are unsafe in a microwave. Whole eggs can explode, and whole or large raw poultry cooks so unevenly that it can leave cold spots where bacteria survive. For these, the tool shows a safety warning instead of a time. Use a conventional oven and a thermometer.

Cover it, stir it, and let it stand. Because microwaves heat unevenly, cover the dish, and stir or rotate the food halfway through. When it stops, let it stand for a couple of minutes. It keeps cooking during that rest, and the heat evens out.

Check the temperature in several places. This is straight from the USDA. A microwave leaves cold spots, so for anything with meat, check the internal temperature with a thermometer in more than one spot, not just the middle.
