How to Use the Converter Above

You’ve got a slow cooker recipe, but you don’t have all day. A pressure cooker can turn an 8-hour braise into something ready in well under an hour. The converter above works out the pressure-cook time from your slow cooker recipe — or the reverse, if you want to take a pressure recipe low and slow. Here’s how to get the most out of it.

The quick version

Pressure cookers are dramatically faster than slow cookers. As a rough rule, the pressure-cook time in minutes is about your slow cooker HIGH hours times six. So 4 hours on HIGH (or 8 on LOW) is roughly 24 minutes under pressure. The tool does that math and adjusts for the kind of cooker you have.

Step by step

1. Pick your direction. Going from a slow cooker recipe to your pressure cooker? Keep it on Slow Cooker → Pressure Cooker. Want to take a pressure recipe and cook it slowly instead? Flip to Pressure Cooker → Slow Cooker.

2. Choose your cooker type — this matters. Stovetop pressure cookers run at about 15 psi and cook faster. Electric ones, like an Instant Pot, run lower (around 11 psi) and need roughly 25% more time for the same result. Pick the one you have and the tool adjusts the time for you. This is the step most generic converters skip.

3. Choose your food type and slow cooker setting. Pick the closest food match — general, meat, beans, or vegetables — and whether your recipe runs on LOW or HIGH. There are quick-set buttons for common times. (In the reverse direction you enter the pressure time in minutes instead; the tool switches the labels for you.)

4. Read your result. You’ll get a pressure-cook time as a range, with your cooker type shown so you can see which assumption produced it. The range matters — pressure cooking isn’t exact, and a range is more honest than a single number.

A few things worth knowing

Pressure cookers need liquid. This is the one that catches people out. A pressure cooker needs at least about a cup of liquid to come up to pressure at all. If your slow cooker recipe is dry, add liquid up to that minimum, or it simply won’t work.

The timer isn’t the whole story. The cook time the tool gives you is the time at pressure. On top of that, the cooker takes several minutes to build pressure before the timer starts, and the food keeps cooking while the pressure releases afterward. So the total time in the kitchen is longer than the number shown — still far faster than a slow cooker, just not instant.

Add vegetables near the end. Vegetables turn to mush under pressure if they go in at the start. The reliable method is to pressure-cook the meat, beans, or grains first, release the pressure, add the vegetables, then cook a few more minutes. The tool reminds you of this when you pick vegetables.

Brown your meat first. For meat dishes, a quick brown (most electric cookers have a sauté mode) adds a lot of flavour before you pressure-cook. And always finish by checking the internal temperature with a thermometer.

Why you can trust the numbers

Straight up: I’m a developer, not a chef. So I didn’t guess these. The core “times six” rule and the stovetop-versus-electric difference both come from published sources, including a university extension service, and I list them on the How We Calculate page. I’ll be honest about one part too: the small per-food adjustments (meat and beans a little longer, vegetables a little less) follow the general guidance in those sources, but the exact size of the tweak is my own conservative call — I’d rather tell you that than pretend it came straight from a chart.

And for anything with meat: please use a thermometer and check it’s reached a safe internal temperature. A timer says “probably done”; a thermometer says “safe to eat.”
